B. H. Carroll was a giant of a preacher. That was true physically-he was 6′ 4″ tall and his beard flowed almost to his waist, giving him the semblance of an old prophet. And he was a giant intellectually. He was born in Carrollton, Mississippi, one of twelve children. At age 18 he graduated from Waco University, taught some school, and engaged in numerous great debates.

    He was 28 years pastor of the First Baptist Church, Waco, Texas, then became Dean of Bible at Baylor University, then helped found and later became president of Southwestern Baptist Seminary in Fort Worth (1908 until his death in 1914).

    He was not only a voracious reader, but he wrote! Doubtless, his most important contribution was his Interpretation of the English Bible-commentaries and messages that have become a Christian classic.

    Whether as pastor, educator or writer, B. H. Carroll was a giant for God. With his erudite mind and evangelistic heart, for half a century he served the Lord well.

    At a memorial service for him, Dr. George Truett said, “The man was a giant of the Faith, a great preacher and a man who influenced men in a positive way toward faith in Christ. The pulpit was his throne, and he occupied it like a king.” (Sword of The Lord)
