Contemplating Life

Home > Gems & Jewels > Contemplating Life

I have always loved poetry, pretty much poetry of any kind.  Often in the night watches when I am silent to the Lord, something comes to mind that I have read or heard, something God wants me to think about. . .One of my favorite books is THE BEST LOVED POEMS OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.  Here is a poem from that collection that speaks to me:

     A BAG OF TOOLS

ISN’T IT strange
That princes and kings,
And clowns that caper
In sawdust rings,
And common people
Like you and me
Are builders for eternity?

Each is given a bag of tools,
A shapeless mass,
A book of rules;
And each must make–
Ere life is flown–
A stumbling block
Or a steppingstone.

Now, that is something to contemplate!
